Responsible Gaming (GameSense)

Gambling should be entertainment — not a way to make money. Set your limits, know the signs, and find support whenever you need it.

Our commitment

Gambling is meant to be entertainment — not a way to make money, repay debts or generate income. As gambling in British Columbia is conducted, managed and operated by BCLC, a provincial Crown corporation, we take our responsibility to keep play safe seriously. Our responsible gambling program is GameSense. We are committed to preventing gambling harm, protecting minors and young adults, providing self-control tools, helping you understand how games work, and supporting players who may be at risk. For free and confidential support in British Columbia, contact the BC Responsible & Problem Gambling Program at 1-888-795-6111 (24/7).

19+ only

All services are for persons aged 19 and over who are resident in and located in British Columbia. We verify your age, identity and residency before granting full access. It is wrong — and against our rules — to play on behalf of, or to enable, a minor.

Set deposit and spending limits

Through GameSense and your account you can set daily, weekly or monthly deposit limits, as well as loss limits and time/session limits. A decrease to a limit applies immediately; an increase applies only after the applicable waiting period, so a decision in the moment cannot override one you made calmly. Setting a limit is one of the most effective ways to keep play on track.

Reality checks and activity history

You can turn on reality-check reminders that show how long you have been playing and your net position, and you can review your complete deposit, withdrawal and play history at any time from your account. Seeing your activity clearly helps you make informed choices and stay aware of time and spend.

Take a break or use Game Break

Need to step away? You can take a break to pause your play, or enrol in Game Break (Voluntary Self-Exclusion) to exclude yourself for a period you choose. We check self-exclusion status at registration and at login, and during an active exclusion you cannot open an account or play. See our Voluntary Self-Exclusion page to learn how to enrol and what to expect.

Dedicated tools and pages

Each of our key tools has its own detailed page. Visit Gambling Limits to set deposit and time limits; Taking a Break to take a short time-out; and Voluntary Self-Exclusion (Game Break) for a stronger pause. You can reach all three from the Responsible Gaming menu in the footer and the sidebar.

Understanding the games

GameSense helps you understand how the games work, that outcomes are based on chance, and that the odds always favour the house over time. Games of chance have no memory: past results do not change the odds of the next draw, and a near miss is still a loss. Knowing the facts helps you make informed choices and keep play in perspective — as entertainment, with an expected cost, not a source of income.

Signs of gambling harm

You may be at risk if you play more or longer than intended; spend money you cannot afford; chase losses; borrow to play; feel stress, guilt or anxiety about gambling; hide your gambling; or it affects work, study or relationships. Recognising yourself? Set a limit, take a break or seek help — there is no shame in it.

Tips for safer play

Treat gambling as entertainment, not income. Set a budget before you start and stick to it. Only play with money you can afford to lose. Do not chase losses or play to escape stress. Balance gambling with other activities, take regular breaks, and never gamble while under the influence or upset. Decide in advance how much time and money is reasonable for you.

Protecting minors

You must be 19 or older to hold an account or play. We verify age, identity and residency at registration and may re-verify at any time. Keep your login details private and log out after use. Parental control software can block gambling sites: Windows Family Safety, Apple Screen Time, Android Family Link, and network-level filtering. Never let a minor play under your account.

Support for friends and family

Problem gambling affects people close to the player too. If someone you care about is struggling, you can encourage them to use these tools, set limits together, and reach out to the BC Responsible & Problem Gambling Program, which also supports family members. Help is confidential and free.

Where to get help

GameSense provides responsible gambling information and support. The BC Responsible & Problem Gambling Program offers free, confidential counselling and referrals at 1-888-795-6111 (24/7). Your doctor can also refer you to specialist support. Reaching out is a sign of strength, and support works.
